Cooking with Amanda

I really like taking photos of food. No particular reason - I just like it. I don't really think I'm terribly good at it - it's just fun. And since the Pioneer Woman is always posting photos of food, and her recipes, I thought, hey, I could do that, too! Then it would be like I took all these pictures of food for a reason.

So yesterday at lunch time, I realized that it's been a long time since I did a proper trip to the grocery store. I went foraging through my fridge and cupboards to find enough ingredients to pull together a lunch for Marissa and myself.

I found some crescent rolls (currently on sale 3/$5 at Zehrs, just so you know), but croissants didn't seem like much of a lunch. So I rolled it out, rearranged the doughy triangles, and pinched all the seams together. Then stuck it in the oven until it was golden brown.

Then I schmeared it with cream cheese, and topped it with fresh tomatoes, coarsely chopped pecans, and some sliced olives from a questionably old but previously unopened and okay-smelling jar on the top shelf of a cupboard.

Then I thought, Hey, I could put it back in the oven on broil for just a couple minutes and it would melt the cream cheese a little, and maybe do something favourable to the other ingredients. Amd the result was...

... which caused me to erupt into cries of "No! No! No!" until the smoke detector started going off, and I started yelling at it: "I Know! I Know! I Know!"

Marissa stood in the doorway to the kitchen, fairly unaffected by the smoke detector because, frankly, my kids are used to that, but laughing at me all the while. And when I showed her our lunch, she said "I'm not eating that." And I couldn't really blame her.

But there was no way I was going to cook something else, so I found some cheese and crackers and sandwich meat for her, and I got rid of the burnt edges and some of the more deeply blackened pecans, and tried my little concoction. And you know what? It was kind of awesome.

Still, I don't think Cooking with Amanda will become a regular feature.

That was the other Amanda, not me, and I'm guessing she only deleted it because she recently moved her blog. Nothing incriminating got deleted!

And while Cooking with Amanda won't become a regular feature, I could easily make a regular feature of things I don't do well, so if you really want to know them, I'd be happy to oblige.

Love this post!! Very entertaining - brought several chuckles! I know there have been a few times when "Hunter Stew" (search through the cabinets to hunt up something you can toss together to form some sort of meal)has been served at my house and often met with one or more family members proclaiming 'I'm not eathing THAT!'

That's awesome! Totally looks like something I'd do. It looks like a really yummy idea though, well except for the broiling part :)
